Ensuring Resilience: How to Prepare and Test it?

You put significant effort and time into the development of high-quality services, and then suddenly, an unforeseen event occurs — whether it’s an electricity outage during a flood or a colleague’s mistake leading to data loss. How prepared are you to face such challenges, and do you have a plan to quickly restore your systems to normal operation?

While it may seem like an unlikely event, disasters happen more often than we tend to think. The resilience of applications is more crucial than ever for maintaining business continuity during unexpected disruptions, whether you work in a big corporation or a small startup.

In this presentation, I will share my experience in preparing for unexpected events within a large corporation to ensure the system’s high availability. I will discuss ways to address system resilience during disruptions and strategies for recovering and restoring systems after an outage. While sharing our experience, I will cover:
• The importance of Disaster Recovery (DR) planning for business continuity.
• The practical applicability of software testing in the context of Disaster Recovery (DR).
• How to approach a DR plan (with examples of disaster scenarios and ways to address them for cloud-based applications).
• Challenges we encountered during DR planning and testing.

The approach integrates Disaster Recovery into the broader spectrum of Quality Assurance, emphasizes its importance in achieving reliable and resilient systems, and highlights the importance and methods of involving QA Engineers in DR planning and testing.

  • The role of a Test Engineer in Disaster Recovery planning and testing. How testers, test managers, and the rest of the team contribute to creating, validating, and maintaining a robust Disaster Recovery strategy.
  • Key points that should be considered in a DR plan, from defining recovery objectives (RTO/RPO) to selecting appropriate testing methods and recovery strategies.
  • When and how to conduct Disaster Recovery testing to increase teams’ preparedness for unexpected disasters and address common obstacles that can make or break a recovery strategy.
